Rumson is one of New Jersey’s most affluent communities.  The 5.2-square-mile borough, bounded by the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers, is one of the most exclusive on the Jersey shore.   Many high level executives who live in Rumson  conveniently  commute to downtown Manhattan by ferry.

Rumson is known for its many sprawling turn-of-the-century estates located along the shores of the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers and along historic Rumson Road, which serves as one of Rumson's main thoroughfares. In addition to the many large and beautiful estates-some on dozens of acres-the town is also known for its small, turn-of-the-century converted bungalows and capes.

 Many of Rumson's old estates were built as summer homes for wealthy New York bankers and industrialists. The oldest of Rumson's homes was the Tredwell House, named after a family that summered here for almost 100 years. The oldest part of the house was built in 1670 and once occupied 700 acres. It was the second oldest building in Monmouth County when it was destroyed by fire in 2006.

There are three small business districts in Rumson along River Road, offering plenty of options for residents and visitors, from fine restaurants  to specialty shops. Recreational facilities are also in abundance, which is another benefit that Rumson’s  residents enjoy.  One of them, the  Sea Bright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club, has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

Rumson has a boat ramp, and the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club is next door in Fair Haven.

There are two schools in Rumson, one serving grades K-3, the other serves grades 4-8. These two schools serve approximately 1,000 students. High school students attend Rumson - Fair Haven Regional High School.
